The Mermaid Parade
There were more gawkers and photographers (such as myself) than mermaids, which was a little disappointing. Also, it was about 1,246 Degrees Fahrenheit outside. Still, I like these pictures. They capture the uninhibited zaniness of the event. From what I could tell, the whole affair seemed to be a celebration of weirdness, which, naturally, translated into acceptable public nudity. The Mermaid Parade is Coney Island's answer to Mardi Gras in New Orleans or Fantasy Fest in Key West.
