easy (small “e” is intentional) refers to themselves as a “transcendental art pop collective.” The members met while attending CalArts. easy lives together in a compound known as “Hello Forever,” which I imagine is like an episode of “Big Bang Theory” if Sheldon, Leonard, and Co. dropped acid and picked up instruments.
Their first single ever is “I Want to Marry You,” which carries a definite Devendra Banhart vibe. I was actually hoping for this since it’s music that’s brainy and fun without being wimpy.
The single begins with finger-snaps and harmonies, followed by a ukele and heavy drums. It’s hippy heaven, but the washed face and clean clothes kind. Distorted and sampled choral voices flicker around a man singing: “Apple cider dripping down my tongue / Just perfectly fallen off the right tree…”
What truly and deeply makes this song (or any song arguably) is the chorus. Here, it’s a blissful Beach Boys harmony: “I want to marry you todayayayayyy!” 100% sure to be added to the wedding playlist for every DJ in the universe soon.
“Memories of a time when we were ageless / Offer her my hand and so she takes it… /
There is no bio offered on the group, so I have no idea who to credit for anything. Their social media offers zero clues either. I can’t help but think this is on purpose though. It’s all about the music, man. Keep the focus on the music, which is very California actually.
A released statement from the band helps a little: “easy is a community and a vision. We are sisters and brothers who share a love of music and a love of humanity. We revere the classics and demand radical transformation.”
A bold message from such positive music. Radical transformation from what? Everything?
Let’s go for it.
